Knöcheltief steht der Henker im Blut der Vitalienbrüder, als 1401 auf dem Grasbrook das Urteil des Senats vollstreckt wird. Eine riesige Menge Schaulustiger wohnt dem Spektakel bei.
Vor seinem Ableben handelt Störtebeker aus, dass er als erster gekoepft wird. Die Kumpanen, an denen er noch kopflos vorbeilaufen kann, sollen begnadigt werden. Nach dem elften stellt ihm der tückische Henker allerdings ein Bein. Veständlich, schließlich bekommt er 8 Schilling pro Kopf.
Diese werden im Anschluss der Prozedur als Warnung für Nachahmer auf Pfähle genagelt.
